The Nevi'im and Ketuvim portions are more conducive to this "book" only contents approach, but a finer structure would have made these more accessible as well with very little effort. I immediately became aware of “sprayed letters and words” across many pages, making no sense (through Minor Prophets mostly but will check further). HEEEEELLLLLP!!!!!! I especially enjoy his side trips and analogies to later literature (my field is 18th century prose fiction) and his early work in Fielding is, to my mind, some of the best I have read.

Robert Alter understands the Scriptures as dynamic and multi-layered and shows how language that might not be literally true approximates deep truth nonetheless. Also, a very welcomed addition to Alter's commentary in his English translation is Alter's acknowledgment of the Christian understanding and exegetical perspective of certain passaged in the Hebrew Bible even if he only dismisses them as invalid.
